I'm looking to move to Newcastle from Bournemouth. Is there any particular areas to avoid (ie; high crime or anti-social behaviour)?

I'm looking to move to Newcastle area and I don't know anything about which areas to avoid due to high crime etc... also any advice about DSS rentals would be fab!!!

  • Not really, overall it is seen as a good place to live. The centre can get lively at the weekend as has a vibrant club/bar culture. Boscombe and Pokesdown were the historically cheaper areas but they seem to be rising. Popular areas are Southbourne and Christchurch but these are not cheap. Traffic during the summer can be difficult though.

  • Which Newcastle? Newcastle Upon Tyne or Newcastle Under Lyme? If its the former then you're best of looking around Heaton, Gosforth (bit expensive), Benton, Forest Hall, Kenton and Kingston Park. The perceived bad areas are quite well documented - Benwell, Elswick, Byker, Cowgate, Scotswood - but its been a while since I've been there so they might have improved a bit, but as with anywhere the repuations are often exaggerated. Slightly cheaper is Gateshead, just across the Tyne and some areas are on the metro tram transport line. I lived in Wardley which is walking distance from a Metro station and I think its very safe. Low Fell's pretty good (beware though - estate agents class a lot of surrounding areas as Low Fell when they really aren't. Whickham, Ryton and around there are nice too.
